Be a Mentor

Picture yourself making the difference in a young girl's life…

Imagine her, one day in the future, loving her career in the field of high tech, someone cared enough today to prepare her for tomorrow's possibilities…

This is an unusual opportunity for fun, excitement, life-long connections, satisfaction from making a difference in a young person’s life. Code Girls United is a non-profit organization focused on teaching young girls in 4th to 8th grade to learn to code their own future—with you as a mentor!!!

Certainly all of tomorrow’s jobs will include some aspect of technology. Young women who succeed in tomorrow’s high-tech careers must be:

  • Problem solvers
  • Steeped in business skills
  • Computer literate

Why focus on 4th through 8th grade level girls? At this level, girls are still exploring and finding out what interests them. In our experience, those who go through the program come out with a bolstered sense of confidence in their ability to work with technology. Importantly, they are more likely to take computer classes offered by the school district in high school and, eventually college.

The 1, 2, 3’s of Code Girls United Program

  1. We teach the fundamentals of computer science. We use the App-inventor tool from Massachusetts Institute of Technology to teach girls how to build real-world apps. Our curriculum was developed by a professor at the University of San Francisco to teach the fundamentals of Computer Science and the basics of coding.
  2. We solve real-world problems from our community so the girls learn real skills. We work in teams following standard business practices. The girls conduct market research, create a business plan, complete a development and design process, write code to bring their App alive, and, finally, formally present and demonstrate their App. The skills they learn are not offered in the schools and are compatible with many university level courses!
  3. We compete with the best programs around the U.S.A. and internationally. Our girls enter local, regional, and national APP competitions. And our teams are winners!
